ICONS DEDICATED TO INTERNATIONAL
MATHEMATICAL OLYMPICS
In July 1959, at the initiative of the Romanian Mathematical and Physical Society and the Romanian Ministry of Education, the 1st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) was held. Teams from Bulgaria, Hungary, the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Romania, the USSR and Czechoslovakia took part in it. Since then, traditionally, in July every year, the International Mathematical Olympiads are held in one of the socialist countries.
The delegation of each country consists of 8 participants, a team leader and his deputy. All team leaders are members of the international jury. Team members are high school seniors no older than 19 years old, who, as a rule, are winners of national Olympiads (see «Kvant», No. 11, 1971).
Before the start of the Olympiad, each country assigns its own tasks to the organization of the organizing country. From among them, the international jury selects 6-7 problems for the Olympiad. The difficulty of each task is assessed in points. The jury sets the maximum number of points that can be awarded for each problem. To reward the Olympiad participants who have scored the appropriate number of points (the number of points is determined by the international jury), first, second and third prizes and certificates of honor have been established.
In honor of the Olympiad, special badges are issued and awarded to all participants in the Olympiad.
