SYMPOSIA
YOUNG MATHEMATICS

The idea of a gathering of students from specialized physics and mathematics schools in different cities originated at school No. 40 in Gorky. In March 1971, during the spring school holidays, at the invitation of this school, representatives of mathematical schools in Moscow, Riga, Rostov, Volgograd, Kishnev, Alma-Ata, Tbilisi, Kostroma, Leningrad and Kyiv gathered in Gorky.

The symposium consisted of several sections, at each of which schoolchildren made reports. The work of the sections was led by scientists from Gorky State University.

The mathematics section was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor D. A. Gudkov. At this section, reports were heard on “Non-standard sums”, “Modeling of reflexes”, “Matematika and linguistics”, “Calculating the area of a shadow”, “Self-reproduction of numbers” and others.

Reports were given by: Y. Shneiderman (10th grade, no. 40, Gorky), A. Knafel (8th grade, no. 40, Gorky), N. Pomapkina (10th grade, no. 40, Gorky), O. Malinovsky (9th grade, no. 13, Riga), A. Borisenko (10th grade, no. 40, Gorky), A. Borisenko (10th grade, no. 40, Gorky), 145, Kyiv), I. Rauhvaer (10th grade, no. 34, Kishnev), M. Vishik (10th grade, no. 444, Moscow), V. Kaplinsky (8th grade, no. 444, Moscow) and others.

The physics section was headed by Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor M. S. Kovner. At this section, reports were heard “Peaceful atom - for the service of human water supply”, “On analogies in physics”, “On the “peaceful mass” method and its application in solving physical problems”, “Production and study of thin crystalline films”, “Sweep generator and oscilloscope” and others.

Reports were given by: A. Mirukholova (10th grade, no. 42, Tbilisi), A. Ezersky (10th grade, no. 40, Gorky), Y. Khandrus (10th grade, no. 145, Kyiv), I. Molan (10th grade, no. 34, Kishnev), N. Chaika (10th grade, no. 42, Tbilisi), M. Gershtein (10th grade, no. 40, Gorky), M. Gomayunov (10th grade, no. 239, Leningrad) and others.

There were also sections of astronomy, chemistry and regional studies.

During the symposium, students not only read and discussed reports. They also managed to get acquainted with the work of school No. 40, with the sights of the city, visited museums, and met with scientists.
